UTS, Faculty of Science through its external engagement program is presenting this series of short courses for professionals in the area of contaminated site assessment, remediation and management (CSARM). The Department of Environmental Sciences is developing this program with the support of NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) and industry consultants. The comprehensive program of eight modules will enable participants to update their specific area of expertise, to extend their knowledge base and to network with colleagues in industry and government in this complex field of environmental management.

Module E: Risk based Site Assessment, 16-18 September 2010

UTS Faculty of Science through its external engagement program is presenting this series of short courses for professionals in the area of contaminated site assessment, remediation and management (CSARM). The Department of Environmental Sciences has developed this program with the support of NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) and industry consultants. This comprehensive program will enable participants to update their specific area of expertise, extend their knowledge base and to network with colleagues in industry and government in this complex field of environmental management.

Module E: Risk based Site Assessment

This module examines the concepts underlying environmental risk assessment (ERA) methods in site assessment and the application of ERA in site evaluation, remediation and management. It evaluates the application of major guidelines for media quality in use in NSW and elsewhere in Australia, and addresses the methodology of human health and ecological risk assessment that is an integral part of contaminated site assessment and management. Case studies are used throughout to illustrate the concepts and applications introduced in this module and a field trip is included.

PRESENTERS
Presenters include a good mix of UTS: Science and Engineering academics, DECC and CSIRO officers, industry practitioners and experts in environmental law.

The module will provide an understanding of:
• ERA principles and methodologies
• The basis of Australian Water Quality Guidelines, their application and limitations
• Other risk-based approaches
• How to apply guidelines in CSARM
