UTS, Faculty of Science through its external engagement program is presenting this series of short courses for professionals in the area of contaminated site assessment, remediation and management (CSARM). The Department of Environmental Sciences is developing this program with the support of NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) and industry consultants. The comprehensive program of eight modules will enable participants to update their specific area of expertise, to extend their knowledge base and to network with colleagues in industry and government in this complex field of environmental management.

UTS Faculty of Science through its external engagement program is presenting this series of short courses for professionals in the area of contaminated site assessment, remediation and management (CSARM). The Department of Environmental Sciences has developed this program with the support of NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) and industry consultants. This comprehensive program will enable participants to update their specific area of expertise, extend their knowledge base and to network with colleagues in industry and government in this complex field of environmental management.

Module B: Effective Contaminated Site Assessment

Effective site assessment requires a thorough investigative approach and data acquisition in order to provide reliable information about the potential risk to human health and environment and set the scene for the remediation process.

This module addresses the purposes and drivers of the stages of effective site assessment and considers the importance of appropriate sampling design and acquisition of quality data. The assessment and remediation of groundwater contamination will be addressed and important non-technical issues will be untangled.

PRESENTERS
Presenters include a good mix of UTS: Science and Engineering academics, DECC and CSIRO officers, industry practitioners and experts in environmental law.

COURSE OUTCOMES - specific to Module B

You will gain a good understanding of:

  • Requirements of preliminary and detailed site investigation and assessment programs
  • What is required to determine if a site is “significantly contaminated land”
  • Designing and interpreting effective site investigation programs
  • Understanding Data Quality Objectives and how to deal with and report uncertainties
